The Primary Years Programme (PYP) provides a comprehensive approach to teaching and learning by encompassing children's diverse needs, including their academic, social, physical, emotional and cultural needs. The teaching models and methods are firmly rooted in research and validated by years of rigorous evaluation.
The PYP Curriculum
At the center of the PYP curriculum are five essential elements: knowledge, concepts, skills, attitudes, and action. The aim of the Programme is to help students acquire a holistic understanding of six main themes, shown on the outside of the curriculum model, through the coordinated use and development of the essential elements.

The PYP identifies a body of knowledge for all students in all cultures, in six subject areas : |
Languages |
Social Studies |
Mathematics |
Science and Technology |
The Arts |
Personal, Social, and Physical Education |
In the spirit of internationalism, students are required to learn a second language in addition to the language of instruction of the school. At Lehigh Valley Academy this second language is Spanish.
Areas of Interaction
The essential elements at the center of the curriculum model are developed and applied in a context defined by six themes that cross all disciplines:
Who we are |
Where we are in place and time |
How we express ourselves |
How the world works |
How we organize ourselves |
Sharing the planet |
The PYP requires that individual portfolios of student achievement be kept to document progress. Students aged 10 to 12, in the final year of the Programme, are expected to participate in a culminating project, the PYP exhibition. This is designed to demonstrate their proficiencies in all areas of the Programme.
Personalizing the Educational Experience
The PYP defines the characteristics of students who are aware of and sensitive to the experiences of others. These create an individual profile of each PYP student, which helps teachers and students to establish goals, plan units of inquiry, and assess performance.
The PYP Student Profile encourages and celebrates students as:
Inquirers |
Thinkers |
Communicators |
Risk takers |
Knowledgeable |
Principled |
Caring |
Open-minded |
Well-balanced |
Reflective |
The Final Result – progressing to MYP
This curriculum is a Programme that builds upon itself. From kindergarten through fifth grade, students are learning a continuation of academics that provides a natural progression of thought, process, and application. The students who progress through the PYP curriculum are able to apply the culmination of this learning as a strong foundation to the MYP curriculum and process.
